Introduction:
Dr. Rawle Fabian Philbert is a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who graduated from Howard University, College of Dentistry with honors and distinctive recognition in 1987. He subsequently moved to New York City where he matriculated into the post-graduate Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training program at Harlem Hospital. After four years of rigorous training (in the process, serving as Chief Resident),he graduated in 1991 to become an Attending Physician in many New York hospitals. Among them Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center (affiliated with Downtown Bronx Medical Associated and Cornell Medical center) 1997-present,Harlem Hospital Center (1993-1997), North General Hospital (1993-1997), St. Barnabas Hospital (1991-to current) and Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center (1993-1997). He also maintained a private practice at Lady of Mercy Medical Center between 1993 and 1997.
His professional responsibilities at these institutions include training, teaching and supervision of physicians during the period of their postgraduate training.
After graduating from the residency-training program, Dr. Philbert’s love of writing allowed him to publish widely in peer review journals, magazines and also the Internet. His most recent articles were jointly published in the Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery on Median Palatal Cyst: A Case report and Review of the Literature” (April 2009), Bilateral Pseudoaneurysms of the Superficial Temporal Artery Following Reconstruction of the Frontal Sinus: A Case Report (July 2007) and Orthognathic Surgery in a Patient with Myotonic Dystrophy: Review of the literature and Report of a Case (December 2007). The article Understanding the Management and management of the “Dry Socket” Syndrome Comprehensive review of the Literature: was published in the Journal Oral Surgery, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine January 2009.
Dr. Rawle Philbert was identified and honored three consecutive years (starting in 1994) at Harlem Hospital as the “Attending Physician of the Year” by the staff, for unprecedented and committed service in the training of residents and the quality of Care that was given to the patients he managed.
While at Howard University Dr. Philbert received several awards: the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Pi Pi Award, Quintessence Publishing Company Award in Research Writing, National Dental Association Award and the Dr. Thomas H. Walter Memorial Award. In 1992, Dr. Rawle Philbert was recognized in Who is Who Among Young Rising Americans.
In 2000 he was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Dentistry and three years later, he was inducted into the prestigious New York Academy of Dentistry.
Rawle believes in providing philanthropic services and helping others. In 1995, he found time to provide voluntary service to the indigent people of Valencia, Venezuela South America through the surgical management of Cleft Lip and Palate deformities in children and adults.
During his nine-year term (1990-1999) as Medical Director of a 1200 membership church in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Philbert organizes health fairs, conferences and lectures. In addition, a wide variety of health-related programs were scheduled for the church and the community. He also served as the Chairman of the Hanson Place School Board and President of the Hanson Place Development Corporation-a non-profit corporation .
Currently, Dr. Philbert is the Chairman of the Department of Dentistry/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the Bronx, New York. He is also the Program Director of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery of the residency training program at the same institution. He holds academic appointment at Weil Cornell Medical School as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery and the Clinical Associate Professor at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Philbert is a member of numerous committees and holds numerous key leadership positions namely: the Medical Executive Committee, Hospital-Wide Quality Assurance Committee, Credential Committee (Chairperson), the Operating Room Committee and Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center Cabinet. Recently (April 2007) he was selected as the Chairperson of the Department of Medicine Search Committee to identify a new Chairman.
Dr. Philbert professional organizational memberships include the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Dental Association, New York State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons New York Academy of Dentistry and the Dental Society of the State of New York, just to name a few.
Dr. Philbert has set the standard of mentorship, professionalism and leadership for many including his peers. Because of his surgical expertise and diverse knowledge, many groups and organizations seek his consultation for a wide variety of information. This has in part, led to his reappointment as an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency training program accreditation site surveyor/consultant by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation effective October 2013. He is now able to evaluate the educational training standards of American Dental Association accredited surgical training programs. He is also appointed as an examiner for the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
As Educator, Surgeon and friend, Dr. Philbert continues to win the trust, respected and admiration of his peers as he fosters excellent professional relationships with individuals who aspire to the highest level of excellence.
Despite his overwhelming successes, accomplishments and visionary professional skills, Dr. Philbert remains very humble and committed to his ideals and beliefs in serving others. He is married to Elvie who is a Cardio Thoracic nurse. They have two children-Desiree (College) and Jonathan (High School).
